Acidic Character Of Acetylene

Acetylene is a type of alkyne having two carbons joined by sp hybridized carbon atom.

The H attached to triple bonded carbon known as acetylinic hydrogen. Structure of acetylene is,

In sp hybridization the percentage of s character is 50%. s character is related with the presence of s orbital in the atom which is forming a covalent bond whether it is making a sigma bond or pi bond.

As the % s character increases between the bond, the bond strength also increases. which is as follows

As it clear form the above structure that acetylene contains two sp carbon atom, the bonding between those two carbon is strong.

Because of this the bond length between C-C decreases (becomes stronger ) and bond length between C-H increases and going away form the carbon.

As a result the H atom attach to C can be removed easily in presence of strong base or metals like Na. So acetylene shows acidic nature where as alkene and alkane does not show acidic property.
